Am I Praying or Just Talking to God?

Somewhere along the way, prayer became formal.
Structured. Timed. Polished. Like you're stepping into a meeting. You bow your head. Close your eyes. Choose your words carefully. Because here we go, this is prayer time now.
But later — as you're walking home, or sitting on the bus, lying in bed, whatever — you just start talking...but your focus is heavenly. No introduction. No “Dear Lord”. No theological filter. Just:
“God, I don’t get this.” “Why's it feel like everything's falling apart?” “I thought you got me?” And suddenly it feels… different.
Less spiritual. Less official. So you wonder afterwards:
Did God hear that? Why can't I just pray like that? Is that praying or just me talking? Is that to myself or....?
Reader, listen, prayer was never meant to be a performance. It was never meant to sound impressive. Prayer is just honesty in God’s direction.
Sometimes it’s worship. Sometimes it’s silence. Sometimes it’s frustration without punctuation.
Yes there's a template/guide via Jesus, teaching us to start by focusing on God's glory, moving on to personal needs (provision, forgiveness etc),... but from my heart to yours, Hey God is Father — not just King — prayer can be conversation with respect. It’s access like we once only dreamed of.
So whether it sounds poetic or messy…the Bible verse that springs to mind is: "come boldly before the throne" in Hebrews 4:16, which encourages believers to approach God with confidence to receive mercy and find grace to help in times of need. This invitation is based on having Jesus as a great high priest (and friend)
who understands human weaknesses.
If you're speaking to Him, and you mean it —
you’re praying.
